What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a severe condition where breathing stops and starts repeatedly during sleep. It can lead to dangerous health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and even stroke, if left untreated.

People with sleep apnea often feel tired during the day and may snore loudly or wake up gasping for air. This condition occurs when the muscles in the throat relax too much, blocking the airway. At Ambiance Surgical Arts Center, we offer safe and effective sleep apnea treatment in Miami, FL, to prevent these risks and improve your overall quality of life.

How Is Sleep Apnea
Diagnosed and Treated?

The first step in sleep apnea treatment is recognizing symptoms like snoring, daytime fatigue, and restless sleep. Dr. Jerri Hines offers consultations and uses a detailed history and physical examination to evaluate your condition.

We will use state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging and techniques to assess the anatomic structure in the maxillofacial region to identify the level of airway obstruction. To fully understand your sleep health, you may need a sleep study to monitor your breathing and oxygen levels overnight. This comprehensive approach helps us tailor the best treatment plan for your needs.

Marpe

What Is MARPE
for Sleep Apnea?

Miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) is a non-surgical, non-extraction technique that can help manage sleep apnea by expanding the upper jaw, which can improve airflow through the nose and give the tongue a better resting position, both of which open the airway and reduce sleep apnea symptoms.

The procedure involves placing a custom-made expander and mini-screws along the mid-palatal suture (a crease in the roof of your mouth where two bones come together), expanding the bone. This simple 20-30-minute procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and most people manage any discomfort with over-the-counter painkillers.

Over the next several months, you’ll activate your expander by turning a screw every day. This can create a gap between the teeth as the bone moves, which orthodontics will correct after your treatment.

In more severe cases of sleep apnea, we may recommend additional treatments like repositioning the bones of the upper and lower jaw. At times, an oral appliance can also be helpful for mild cases or in conjunction with other treatments.

What Happens If Your
Sleep Apnea Goes Untreated?

Ignoring sleep apnea can have severe consequences for your health and well-being. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to chronic fatigue, nighttime grinding, decreased concentration, and increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, not to mention accidents from nodding off while working or driving.

Over time, the strain on your heart and lungs can become dangerous, impacting your overall quality of life. Getting the right sleep apnea treatment can help restore restful sleep, improve your daily energy levels, and reduce long-term health risks. At Ambiance Surgical Arts Center, we provide affordable and effective solutions so you can breathe easily and live better.
